What Public Speaking Can Do for You

A Common FearFor many years, studies have shown that people are deathly afraid of speaking in public. After all, there is something inherently unnatural about standing up in front of a crowd and spouting off. To some people, talking in front of a crowd is not much of a challenge; in fact they relish
the experience and cannot get enough of it. For the rest of us, speaking in public is as close to a real-life nightmare as it can get.Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way at all. Just about anyone can develop the skills needed to become a public speaker – after all, why should speaking on your feet be harder than when you speak sitting down? The difficulties in public speaking are mostly mental. When the mental barriers (such as shyness, lack of confidence, inexperience) are torn down, progress in public speaking can be made. Why You Should Learn To Speak In Public Learning to speak in public is no easy task, but it is by no means impossible. First, however, you should have a concrete reason why you would bother to spend the time and energy to learn such a skill. You may ask, what does one stand to gain from learning to speak in public? The answer – and this may sound a little corny – is happiness. We all want recognition for the things we do, and believe it or not, public speaking is a shortcut to being recognized, no matter what kind of work you are engaged in. Look around you and notice that the people who get the promotions and the top jobs aren’t necessarily those who are the best at a given type of work; they are usually those who are able to express their ideas well. By being able to communicate their thoughts clearly, they create the impression that they are experts, even if this may not actually be the case.
