Healing with Crystals: Bloodstone

Bloodstone is variety of quartz that is also known as heliotrope. This name derives from the Greek “helio” meaning “sun” and “trope” meaning “turning.” It acquired this name in ancient times when samples of the polished stone were described as “reflecting the sun.” It is dark green in color with specks of red. The spots of red are due to the high content of iron oxides that are found within the mineral.

According to one legend bloodstone was first formed, when drops of what was thought to be Christ’s blood, fell and stained the existing mineral jasper. It is believed to be a very magical stone with intense healing powers. It has been called the “stone of courage” and “the martyr’s gem.”

Medieval Christians often used bloodstone to carve scenes of the crucifixion and martyrs. Much of the world’s bloodstone is mined in India. Deposits can also be found in Australia, China, Brazil, and in the state of Wyoming in the United States.
