It may sound obvious, but taking public speaking opportunities for the sake of it, or because your job requires it, or because friends and family have put pressure on you is unfortunate. you would prefer to do anything else but speak before an audience, focus on a message that you would like them to take away with them. If you must present or accept an award, then focusing on why the award or the achievement that won the award is important to you, and speak about that. If you must make a speech at a wedding or family event – look at the people involved and speak meaningfully about them, to them. Thinking long and hard about what you want people to take away, and write down some key points that you absolutely must remember. Focusing on the message – on the content – allows you to forget the nerves. Because, when it’s no longer all about you, the fear response about not doing well enough subsides. That is because it’s not you that is the focus, it’s the message. Most of my public speaking has been in the context of activism and community organizing, in circumstances where I care passionately about the issues that I am going to speak about, which means that I have rarely experienced performance anxiety about public speaking – I am so focused on being ‘on message’ of delivering what it is I have to say convincingly, that I only exist as a means of communicating – so my ego simply isn’t involved.
