5 Must-See Holiday Movies

Even though the “Good Old Days” weren’t always good (remember the Great Depression and several wars between 1900 and now), they bring out a longing for an era where life was much simpler and less stressful than our own. The following movies were
made during a bye-gone era when neighbors knew and helped one another and children played in the streets without worry or danger. Christmas was more than a season for retailers or an opportunity to network and pass out business cards. What’s more, people could wish each other “Merry Christmas” and not feel politically incorrect. Take some time out from partying, shopping and over indulging and view one or more of these “feel good” movies all of which are available on DVD.Christmas in ConnecticutStarring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan and Sidney Greenstreet; directed by Peter Godfrey and first released through Warner Brothers on August 11, 1945.Two Navy sailors, Jefferson Jones (Morgan) and “Sinky” Sinkowicz, have been floating for days after their boat was sunk by German U-Boat. Rescued and recovering in the hospital, the two can only think about food. Jones cajoles his nurse, Mary, to bring him a delicious meal, giving her the impression that he wants to marry her. He wants to make sure he gets red meat not baby food but later gets cold feet. Mary writes to the publisher of her favorite magazine, SmartHousekeeping, and asks Alexander Yardley (Sidney Greenstreet) if Jones can spend Christmas on the farm of Smart Housekeeping columnist Elizabeth Lane (Barbara Stanwyck). Mary hopes that Jones will see how wonderful family life really is and keep his promise to her.Elizabeth Lane writes a monthly feature describing her life in an old farm house in rural Connecticut with her husband and baby. The highlight of her monthly column is a fabulous menu complete with gourmet recipes. Yardley agrees to Mary’s plan but there is one problem he is unaware of: Elizabeth Lane doesn’t live in the country, isn’t married, doesn’t have a baby and can’t cook. Elizabeth visits Mr. Yardley and tries to change his mind but only succeeds in having him invite himself, too.

Zac’s 25 Days of Christmas: The Best Holiday Movies and TV Specials

My List of the Best Christmastime Movies and TV ShowsIt’s that time of year again. To quote the beginning of the greatest animated Christmas special ever, “Christmastime is here.” That means, of course, that TV will be full of Christmas specials, programs and movies. At this time of year ABC Family has their 25 Days of Christmas. Just like
it sounds, ABC Family runs Christmas-related programming for 25 days. Their programming, however, cannot compare to mine. Here, for the first time, is Zac’s 25 Days of Christmas.Day 1 of Christmas: ScroogedScrooged, starring Bill Murray, is a great adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Murray is fantastic in the lead roll in this underrated version of the classic Christmas story. Find Scrooged here.Day 2 of Christmas: National Lampoon’s Christmas VacationI’m not a huge fan of this classic but it’s one of the wife’s favorite Christmas movies. I guess you really can’t go wrong with a Griswold Christmas. Christmas Vacation can be bought here.Day 3 of Christmas: White ChristmasToo few people my age have seen this Christmas Classic. Sure, everybody has heard the song “White Christmas.” This classic movie starring Bing Crosby (who else) is a must and can be purchased here.Day 4 of Christmas: Holiday InnWhile you’re introducing yourself to White Christmas enjoy yet another Christmas Classic starring Bing Crosby. Truth be told, many people believe Holiday Inn to be the better Christmas movie. I’m not one of those people but decide for yourself by picking up Holiday Inn here.Day 5 of Christmas: Jingle All the WayFor awhile I thought I was the only person who enjoyed this movie until Em pointed it out in the store the other day. It really is a cute little movie about a father’s search for the perfect present for his son. Oh yeah. Did I mention that the Gov-ah-nator is in it? Check it out.Day 6 of Christmas: Santa Clause 2I really liked the entire trilogy, so much so that Santa Clause 3 just misses the cut. In the sequel to a newer holiday classic Tim Allen once again plays Santa and this time must find a wife. Grab it here.Day 7 of Christmas: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

First College Weight Loss Program Offers College Credits

College Students Can Earn College Credits While in Residential Weight Loss Program

According to a Nov. 12 press release, Academy of the Sierras (AOS) was the first boarding school for overweight adolescents. Located in Reedley, California, AOS now has opened the AOS College Program, which will give young college students a chance to pursue their post

high school education while participating in a recognized and proven weight loss program.

Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum, a professor at Northwestern University Medical School, says that “a recent national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control showed that college students increased their rates of obesity more dramatically than any other age group – a 68% increase during the 1990s. Apparently, many college students develop especially poor nutritional and activity patterns, according to the most recent National College Health Risk Behavior Survey.”

In a 2004 online article, “Obesity on College Campuses Continues to Rise Rapidly,” writer Charlae Washington says that obesity rates in college students have doubled over the past 10 years. Contributing to this alarming statistic is the fact that more and more colleges and universities are contracting with fast food chains and marketers of junk food. Further, says Washington, availability of fresh and healthy food is lacking on campus, as is nutritional education about the connection between unhealthy food choices and health problems later in life, including obesity.

In their treatment of overweight adolescents, AOS has demonstrated exceptional weight loss outcomes. It is not unusual for a typical adolescent to lose 80 lbs. over the 7-month enrollment period. Further, maintaining their weight loss has also shown good results.

How to Determine If You Should Join a Group Weight Loss Program or Do it Alone

Are You a Weight Loss Loner or a Weight Loss Program Joiner?

Most people who want to lose weight understand the basic process – expend more calories than you take in and you’ll lose weight. Some people are confident that they can research options, chose, implement and evaluate the success of any

weight loss plan themselves, while others feel lost and intimidated by all of the available choices and would rather help navigating the weight loss waters. Here are some tips to help determine if you’re a weight loss loner or a weight loss program joiner.

Weight Loss Loners: Most successful weight loss loners are analytical by nature. They like puzzles and problem solving. It’s not too overwhelming for them to determine a safe and healthy calorie level, plan an exercise program, and research which foods and activities will get them there. Weight loss loners will likely even enjoy the process of keeping a food and exercise journal. Loners will likely find charting and analyzing their progress and making any necessary changes to be an enjoyable process. Weight Loss loners are not necessarily loners in real life. They aren’t anti social, but they are usually more willing and able to motivate themselves and obtain individual support from those closest to them rather than feeling they need to get their support from people who are initially strangers. Loners often find they are able to fulfill any need of being part of a team or group by joining a team sport – which helps them simultaneously lose weight and reach out to others. The challenge and hard work of going it alone will actually motivate a weight loss loner whereas this process would likely intimidate or overwhelm a weight loss program joiner. Weight loss loners often really love the “numbers game” challenge of crunching the calories in / exercise out weight loss formula. It’s very important for weight loss loners to do enough research and gain enough knowledge to make sure they are still getting a well balanced diet with enough calories.

Chinese Movie Posters: Discover the Appeal

Chinese movie posters are as diverse as the many cultures that coexist in China. In fact, there is no single dominant strain of Chinese film culture. Rather, we can identify three major threads and many sub-threads within them. There’s the cinema of mainland China, which has developed
since 1949 under the strict control and censorship of the Chinese Communist Party. A nearly diametrically opposite path was followed by the Cinema of Hong Kong – where the government did not regulate films at all. Taiwan, too, developed its own distinct movie culture after its split from Communist China. The languages on Chinese movie posters reflect the astounding linguistic diversity of China as well. Most of the mainland Chinese posters are in Mandarin, whereas the posters from Hong Kong arevirtually all in Cantonese. The two languages differ from one another as much as English might differ from German! The origins of Chinese Cinema can be traced back to 1905, when the first Chinese film – “The Battle of Dingjunshan” – was recorded. It was a performance of the Beijing Opera – the first movie actually produced in China. Ten years later, moviemaking in China began to truly flourish, with the help of qualified film technicians from the United States. Famous early moviemakers like the Mingxing Film Company and the Shaw Brothers’ Tianyi Film Company got their start then. When the Japanese invaded China in the 1930s, the Chinese film industry was dealt a severe blow, and only the Xinhua Film Company survived. This company moved to Hong Kong and would late become a major player in the film industry there. After the Japanese were defeated, a second flowering of Chinese movies occurred in the late 1940s. Movies like “Crows and Sparrows” (1949), “The Spring River Flows East” (1947), and “Myriads of Lights” (1948) are recognized as classics by millions of Chinese moviegoers today. You can celebrate these amazing films with Chinese movie posters.
