Lauer, Cooper, Corning, and Williams Top the List – A Few of Which are Reportedly GayWhile watching a rerun of a South Park episode, I laughed out loud when the girls from the 4th grade class began to giggle and coo about their collective crush on Matt Lauer, handsome host of the Today show. This name drop, coupled with
ongoing chat room discussions of Ron Corning and entire fan pages devoted to Anderson Cooper, reminded me that male TV news personalities remain figures of admiration for more than just their on-camera news abilities. With sexual attractiveness in mind, I started thinking about the “Hot Men of TV News” and even informally polled some friends to get their opinions. Here are just a few of the apparent hot men of TV news. I’ve included a handful of anchors, hosts, and reporters from CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS – men whose names came up over and over.Matt Lauer (NBC)Since 1997, Matt Lauer has been the co-host of NBC’s morning news and talk show, Today. Born in New York City in 1957, Matt has come a long way since working as a news producer in West Virginia after he left Ohio University in 1979. Climbing his way up the ranks, Matt eventually landed his spotlight role with NBC and is now famous for bearing the brunt of Tom Cruise’s ire during a 2005 interview when the touchy subject of psychiatry came up. Of course, Matt presents serious world news alongside human interest pieces, and as one of the hot men of TV news, he remains especially popular among American housewives. In fact, shortly after his debut on the Today show, People magazine named him among the most beautiful people in the world. His down-to-earth, semi-rugged charms mix with his New York sophistication to make his buzzed head and bright grin the object of much fantasy.

Toastmasters and the Art of Public Speaking
In a survey of worst fears, public speaking was second only to death. Many years ago, Dr. Ralph C. Smedley recognized the need to overcome this fear. In October 1924, a group of men led by Dr. Smedley met in the basement of the YMCA in Santa
Tally Ho ToastmastersNeighborhood: 11315 Falls RoadPotomac, MD 20853 Ana, California. Their purpose? To form an association “to afford practice and training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings, and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members.” They called themselves “Toastmasters.” The innovative group was onto something. Soon, men in other communities asked for assistance in forming Toastmasters chapters of their own. By 1930, a federation was necessary to coordinate activities of the many clubs and provide a standard program. When a speaking club in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, expressed interest in forming a Toastmasters club, the group became known as Toastmasters International.Growing Strong For many years, Toastmasters International met in rented office spaces. In 1962, the Toastmasters International staff moved to its first World Headquarters building in Santa Ana, California, not far from where the first club began. By the late 1980s, however, this building could no longer adequately house the growing staff needed to provide services to the growing number of Toastmasters. In 1990, World Headquarters relocated to a new building in Rancho Santa Margarita. The building is designed to accommodate Toastmasters International’s expected growth well into the 21st century. How to Not Prepare for an Internation Public Speaking Competition
Speaking of CompetitionRecently, I competed to be the “World Champion of Public Speaking – 2006″ which is held annually by Toastmasters International. I placed second in the area, one step beyond my club competition. Some would say that my pursuit of this recognition is a bit quixotic, but I would disagree. It
helps me to keep my edge for when I’m called upon to speak at a moment’s notice. After two consecutive years working toward this end, I have determined not to give up my pursuit of one day being recognized as the “World Champion of Public Speaking.”I want to share some of the lessons that I have learned along the way to this goal. They are humorous and inspiring. I hope that you’ll enjoy both sides of the message. Take each one with a grain of salt, as I have, and you might be able to spice up your dinner next evening.Lesson 1: If your major competitors are not native English speakers and the primary language of the contest is English, placing second is not a stunning victory. Both times, I did triumph over a native Spanish speaking person.Lesson 2: If you are the first speaker, chances are that you will not win the contest. Again, on both occasions, I was the first speaker to level set the quality expected by the judges. Like in baseball, I saw myself as the leadoff batter, out to warm up the pitcher to see what he had to throw!Lesson 3: Easy topics will usually win over complex topics. Strike three! On both outings, I strove to be original in my presentation. This year, I was beat by a rival who compared the butterfly’s transformation to Toastmasters’ transformations.Lesson 4: If you want to challenge you audience to see things differently, don’t use the contest to do so. I know for next year that I’ll stick with safe, warm, fuzzy idea that make people feel good when they walk out of the room. Thought provoking calls to action just don’t get good marks with the judges.Lesson 5: Try not to get sick before your speech. I felt the precursor to a massive allergy attack just hours before taking the platform. If I felt better, my concentration and delivery would have been sharper.
Good Reasons to Attend Public Speaking Events
Participating in Public Speaking Event Audiences Can Be RewardingWe live in a society where entertainment and informational opportunities abound. Our homes are wired for the transmission of hundreds of cable television channels. Our cars are outfitted with radios and CD players. Our cities are brimming with athletic competitions,
concerts and festivals. There are so many choices when one considers what they might do. Attending speeches these days is not usually on the top of the “things to do” list for many people. That really isn’t surprising. Public speaking can almost seem like an antiquated notion in this modern era. The idea of attending the kind of event that has been common in human history since the power of speech was first developed seems outmoded and horribly dated. Additionally, public speaking has the reputation of being a boring event. People are often critical of public speakers and speeches, leading us to associate being an audience member with being tortured. In reality, however, there are some very good reasons to take the time to attend speeches. Participating in public speaking as an audience member can be quite rewarding. Instead of eschewing public speaking as a dated activity of little relevance, we would be wise to embrace it more frequently and fervently.
America’s Love of Celebrity Gossip Magazines
Take a Look InsideAmerica is obsessed with celebrity – tabloid magazines with Britney, Angelina and Jennifer on the cover, proliferate. Tired of reading about the war, about the struggling economy, about the crimes committed, more and more Americans are subscribing to the tabloid or celebrity gossip
magazine. Personally I wait with bated breath to receive my weekly subscriptions of People (I read it cover to cover), OK! Weekly, US Weekly, and Star Magazine. These gossipy magazines, filled with juicy details of stars’ private lives, allow me to leave the stresses of my own boring life and enter another world – albeit for a half hour interval. While I know that much of what I read is untrue (or at the very least possibly exaggerated), I don’t really care all that much. I want to see that Brad and Angelina are enjoying their children while taking a family day at a Parisian park. I cheer on singer Sheryl Crow as she fights breast cancer and feel upset with Lance Armstrong, one of my heroes, for leaving her. I pray that Jennifer Aniston will find peace with her new man, Vince. I smile at the antics of heiress Paris Hilton as she parties all night long, making more enemies each day. These gossip magazines take me on a journey into places that I, the average American, would never be able to enter. This dreamlike exploration is one of the reasons for the success of such magazines.Let’s take a look at what appeared on the cover of these celebrity gossip magazines for the week of March 13, 2006:Star Magazine: Proclaiming itself the mag that “breaks celebrity news first”, Star magazine’s cover exclaims that Angelina Jolie hates her new body; how Kevin Federline ruined wife Britney Spears and why she’s finally ready to divorce him; asks the question is Jennifer Aniston pregnant already; and wonders where’s Lance Armstrong now that ex fiancée Sheryl Crow is fighting breast cancer.

The CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer
Veteran Newsman Celebrates 1-year Anniversary as “Temporary” AnchorWe met back in 1988. I was a young, idealistic, local television news producer inPortland, Oregon
. He was 22 years my senior…a dashing national affairs correspondent, covering President Reagan’s re-election campaign. Somebody told him that I had a crush on him, making our brief encounter all the more memorable for me. He was kind, warm, witty, smart, self-effacing and gentlemanly. Everything he seems to be when you see him on TV. And I loved him for it.Eighteen years later, I’m no longer a TV news producer; having dropped out of the rat race, exhausted from fighting with my bosses over the direction TV news was taking. And my crush? He stuck it out, and is now sitting in a network anchor chair, charming viewers while saving “the house that Murrow built.” This is my open love letter to Bob Schieffer, who has been the “temporary” anchor of the CBS Evening News for a year now. My relationship with Bob goes way back. I grew up a Cronkite viewer and a believer in the journalistic ethical standards set by Edward R. Murrow. Although Dan Rather was put in the anchor chair following Cronkite, I could count on seeing Bob every Sunday night (since 1973) when he anchored the CBS Sunday Night News. During the week, I put up with Rather, in order to see the solid reporting of Schieffer, who is one of only a few journalists to have covered all four major beats in the nation’s capital – the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and Capitol Hill. In the 80’s and 90’s, CBS News fell on hard times. Its decline was well documented in the media, assisted by the bizarre behavior of its chief anchor. Its ratings dropped into a distant third place. I abandoned CBS News too, venturing off to work for other network affiliates, and getting my nightly news fix from Jennings or Brokaw. But on Sundays, I always came back to Bob.
